This trip will take us across the ocean from the quaint confines of Peggy’s Cove to Pearl Island, conveniently close to Halifax. The island hosts a nice array of breeding seabirds. The ever-iconic Atlantic Puffin is a mainstay of the island during the summer months, along with its cousins the Razorbill and Black Guillemot. The shoreline and surrounding waters teem with life. Double-crested Cormorants also nest here, as do the odd pair of Arctic Terns, and a small colony of Black-legged Kittiwakes clinging to the island's small cliffs.
On the way back, be on the lookout for Northern Gannets, as well as shearwaters and phalaropes over the open waters. For non-avian wildlife, Grey Seals love loafing off the island's tip and Harbour Porpoises can often be seen cutting the water with their small fins. As with any wildlife adventure, there can always be surprises, so keep your eyes peeled for the exciting and unusual!
Bird Guide: Dominic Cormier (Dominic joined us at Annapolis Royal in May 2023) Dominic is a birder, naturalist, and long-time member of the Nova Scotia birding community. He has been passionate about birds and wildlife since a young age and works as a wildlife biologist and bird guide in Canada and abroad. He has a master’s degree studying movements of migratory songbirds and enjoys all aspects of nature. Dominic is always eager to share his passion, knowledge, and fondness for the birds, places, and wildlife of Nova Scotia and beyond.
Space is limited, so register early. Regular price for this tour, without Dominic, is $92/person tax in!

Nova East Star Party
August 22-24, 2025 at Smiley's Campground in Brooklyn
David Hoskin, Dalhousie retiree and frequent host of Night Sky Gazing for ADRP members, passes along an invitation for ADRP members and friends to attend the Royal Astronomical Society Annual Star Party in August. This is especially exciting for grandkids!
RASC Halifax welcomes registration/attendance of non-RASC members. Saturday is of particular interest, weather permitting, with Walk the Solar System, afternoon solar observing, an evening talk by John Read (author and you-tube personality), and nighttime sky tour/observing sessions from 9:30-11:30 pm.
David suggests that interested ADRP members choose the night with the best weather, Friday or Saturday, to drive from Halifax to Smiley's Park to attend the public sky tour and observing sessions, 9:30 pm -11:30 pm, and then drive back to the city or stay the night at the nearby August House or Super 8 in Windsor. When leaving the park after dark, care must be taken not to have car headlights interfere with observing/imaging. And watch out for animals!

Coming Fall 2025 - Are you Living your Best Retirement Life?
In collaboration with the Seniors' College Association of Nova Scotia(SCANS), the ADRP is co-sponsoring a 6-week course titled "Are you Living your Best Retirement Life?" beginning in October 2025. Each two (2) hour, in-person session will be held in Halifax; exact dates, time, and place to be determined.
The course will be given by Dr. Sue Hutchison, a Dalhousie retiree and ADRP member, who is an expert on lifestyle planning for the retirement transition. Retirees, both recent and longer term, will benefit from taking this course. Spaces will be limited so look for the registration notice in the end of summer ADRP Newsletter or on this webpage, which will be updated as more information becomes available. Dr. Hutchinson's courses for retirees have been well received! Plan to register for this SCANS and ADRP co-sponsored course.
We welcome your suggestions. Click here to send an email. To contact ADRP for all social events please use the following email address: Secretary@theADRP.Ca
